Congratulations to the College Park / Sandy Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity Inc. for placing 3rd Place (bronze) Jay Crosby award. This award is given to chapters with an outstanding Guide Right Programs. Named in honor of Elder Watson Diggs' Laureate Jay Crosby, who served as a founder and mentor of the Dayton Kappa League Program, this award serves as a permanent reminder to his great work.
The College Park/Sandy Spring (CPSS) Guide Right program is an outreach and youth partnership within the community. We uniquely balance community outreach, mentor, educate, and have fun. Within our Guide Right program, we have a Kappa League Program which consists of young men (6th – 12th grade) from the Prince Georges and Montgomery community. The program mentors consist of educators, engineers, lawyers, businessmen, military officers and healthcare workers that serve as excellent role models for the community and young males.
Overall, CPSS Guide Right program is devoted to helping young men reach their potential and become effective, fair and successful leaders. Typical topics include: Naviance, FAFSA Financial Aid Awareness, Science, Technology, Engineer and Math (STEM) and School involvement initiatives. Other activities are the National signing day. This is where seniors are recognized and celebrated with monetary and non-monetary awards. Last year we awarded three students two and four-year scholarships ($1000 per year). Communities events included: Capital Food Bank, Thanksgiving food basket and turkey delivery, a visit to the NASA museum, backpack donation. Social activities included: paintball and to University of Maryland vs Towson basketball game.
